Medical Tourism in India
The process of seeking medical treatment abroad, also known as ‘medical tourism’, is a booming international industry where patients seek healthcare from sources outside their country. This practice has become popular in UK in recent years, with the number of medical tourists increasing multiple times from 50,000 in 2007 to 300,000 in 2010. It is no wonder that medical tourism has gained currency so fast among the mainstream British public, given the long waiting queues at the NHS and high cost of private medical care in UK. The top procedures which medical tourists today opt for include heart surgery, cosmetic surgery, dental implants, fertility treatment, orthopaedic surgery and even paternity tests.
India, once known as the land of elephants and snake charmers, has become one of the most popular medical tourism destinations for Britons and Americans alike, attracting up to 45 % of all medical tourism traffic. Known worldwide for its advanced medical competencies and highly skilled and qualified doctors and surgeons, India offers world class advanced medical procedures like heart surgeries at one tenth the cost, in comparison with the UK.
Apart from the incredibly competitive price, India has another unique selling point in its favor. There are no interminable waiting queues here. Non urgent surgeries in the UK can sometimes mean waiting for up to 16 months but, in India, there is no such wait. Medical tourists find that they can have their surgery completed the next day after their arrival.
A word of caution, though, you will need to do a careful background check and due diligence before choosing a hospital in India. Exposure to indigenous diseases in India, for those without natural immunity, can be particularly dangerous to patients already weakened by surgery. Diseases such as tuberculosis, typhoid and mosquito transmitted infections are more common in India than in the UK.
